About
the Gallery

Syntropia Art Space is run by artist and curator Anna Maria Hedman. We’re always open to new artists and ideas. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
Syntropia Art Space is so far a none funded art- and culture-led initiative that has operated as a dedicated art and cultural space with a focus on so-called outsider art since 2024.
Providing both emerging and established artists with space to work through process, experimentation and public dialogue. The programme includes exhibitions, performances, book launches, music performances, as well as curated dinners and conversations. The work is cross-disciplinary and characterised by a commitment to allowing different art and cultural forms to meet on equal terms.
Initial start and collaborations
The project syntropia.space began as a collective inquiry into deep sustainability within art and related creative fields such as music, photography, food, design and performative practice since 2023, working to establish sustainable structures for artistic practice in Gothenburg.
Despite insecure contractual conditions, Syntropia Art Space has established itself as an important node for artistic collaboration, experimentation and dialogue around questions of the body, life, death, humour, power and cultural policy.
The project has demonstrated that temporary sites can function as significant cultural infrastructures, and actively works to continue its development—either at its current location or through mobile solutions developed in dialogue with property owners and public bodies
Collaboration has been central from the outset, including an early partnership with HDK-Valand, where the premises were used for a semester-long Master’s course in design.
Manifesto:
Syntropia Art Space is founded on the conviction that artistic practice requires clear frameworks in order to be sustainable over time.
The organisation is therefore not driven by constant growth or a high pace of production, but by carefully selected projects in which form, responsibility and resources are held in balance. This means that not all proposals can be realised, even when there is strong artistic interest. Selection and prioritisation are active parts of the work and serve to ensure quality, fair working conditions and artistic integrity.
A central aspect of the practice is the role of guardian of form: to create a context that holds, rather than absorbs. Syntropia Art Space functions as a site where artists, audiences and collaborators meet within clearly defined structures, where responsibility is shared and where artistic labour is recognised as labour. This perspective informs collaborations, programming and the distribution of resources alike.
Fondly quoting craft curator Bettina Køppe: ‘I do not work with assholes’ as a gut guide towards partnerships and collaborations. In day-to-day practice, this self preserving approach is also expressed through a focus on fewer but more in-depth projects, clear agreements with participating artists, and a conscious balance between voluntary engagement and professional work. By refraining from projects that rely on unpaid or boundless labour, conditions are instead created for artistic depth and long-term viability.
